Syncopated Spaces
A jazz-inspired music center in Islamabad, aiming to enhance urban creativity and social harmony through a unique architectural typology.

Islamabad, the capital city of Pakistan, significantly lacks dedicated cultural spaces, particularly for music, which are crucial for fostering creative expression and cultural engagement among its residents. Sibtain Ali's undergraduate thesis proposes the design of a jazz-inspired music center in Islamabad, aiming to enhance urban creativity and social harmony through a unique architectural typology. This project addresses the gap in musical spaces by integrating the improvisational, rhythmic, and communal characteristics of jazz into the design of a music center. The objectives include exploring jazz music elements to derive architectural principles, creating a vibrant public space for diverse cultural activities, and reflecting Islamabad’s cultural and environmental context.

Situated in Shakarparian National Park, this music center serves as a landmark, enriching Islamabad's urban fabric and promoting cultural diversity through the fusion of global and local influences. Using its improvisational style and rich cultural heritage, jazz music is intelligently incorporated into architectural to influence the mindset of the user. The project investigates the metaphorical characteristics of jazz music on the spatial configuration and materiality of a building. It is an inclusive, vibrant, and transformative space which develops a symbiotic link between jazz music characteristics and the built environment by utilizing the dynamic features of the genre.

Sound wave frequencies of each jazz music instrument are used to extract forms from the envelope that it develops. Different sensory aspects are incorporated to give the best experience to the user. Having transformative spaces inside and outside the building allows for more flexibility of the programs. Using the characteristics of jazz music such as improvisation, rhythm, and harmony is central in the design spaces such as lobbies, concert halls, etc.
