Urban Roots Museum
A bio-climatic mobility hub in Nathiagali combining parking solutions with a cultural museum, harmonizing infrastructure with heritage, nature, and sustainability.

Nathiagali, a popular hill station, faces challenges of unorganized parking and limited heritage awareness during peak tourist seasons. The Mobility Hub – Urban Roots Museum was designed to resolve traffic congestion while creating a cultural landmark. The project merges a multi-level parking facility with a museum that highlights biodiversity, culture, and history. Adopting a bio-climatic design approach, the building integrates natural resources—sunlight, wind, and terrain—to reduce energy consumption and enhance comfort. Its organic curves flow with the surrounding landscape, symbolizing rolling hills, promoting natural ventilation, and guiding circulation inside and out. Parking is embedded into the sloping terrain, minimizing its visual footprint, while museum spaces rise above, offering a seamless transition from transport to cultural exploration.

Spatial zoning divides the program into two key layers: the Mobility Hub (lower levels) accommodates multi-level parking for buses and cars, ensuring efficient vehicular and pedestrian circulation, while the Museum (upper levels) hosts distinct spaces: a Heritage Gallery narrating local traditions, an Explorer’s Hub with interactive biodiversity exhibits, and Viewing Terraces connecting visitors to panoramic natural vistas. Sustainability strategies anchor the project: natural cross-ventilation reduces cooling demand, skylights ensure glare-free daylighting, and roof-mounted solar panels offset energy needs. Locally sourced stone, recycled steel, and low-VOC finishes reduce carbon footprint. Green roofs and terraces encourage biodiversity while reducing heat gain, blending built form into the natural environment.

The architectural expression avoids rigid geometries, instead embracing soft curves, earthy tones, and natural textures that create harmony with the serene landscape. The visitor experience is carefully choreographed: from the practical parking plaza, clear wayfinding leads upward into the museum where cultural enrichment and scenic appreciation unfold. This gradual ascent reflects a journey from the urban into nature’s tranquility. By merging infrastructure with cultural and environmental storytelling, the Mobility Hub – Urban Roots Museum transcends its functional role. It becomes a cultural gateway to Nathiagali—an eco-sensitive architectural landmark that fosters connection between people, heritage, and the environment.
