From Solid to Void
D117 is a private residence organized around courtyards, using layered volumes, brick materiality, and landscape integration to create a fluid, contextual, and experiential domestic architecture.

D117 is conceived as a bold contemporary residence where architecture is expressed through strong geometric forms, solids and voids, and a clear volumetric language. The project uses abstraction and monumentality to create a striking presence on its corner site, yet maintains restraint through simplicity. The design communicates a philosophy where tradition and modernity coexist, using contemporary architectural expression to reinterpret historical material and spatial ideas. The house is envisioned not just as a static object, but as a sculptural composition that evolves through movement, layering, and perception. It resists conventional domestic typologies and instead presents a mature, experimental architectural statement that prioritizes experiential quality over stylistic conformity.

The residence is organized around a series of courtyards, creating a multifunctional spatial system that enhances light, ventilation, privacy gradients, and experiential richness. Planning is layered through varying degrees of transparency, frames, voids, and thresholds, generating a dynamic spatial journey from entry to interior. The entry sequence is described as playful yet refined, establishing a strong sense of transition, human scale, and contextual sensitivity. The architecture unfolds gradually, revealing spaces and landscapes in a curated manner, emphasizing movement, continuity, and discovery. The design balances monumentality with intimacy, ensuring the architecture remains inviting and user-centric.

Brick is used as a symbolic skin, reflecting the surrounding self-created landscape while referencing tradition in a contemporary way. Materiality plays a key role in expressing continuity between past and future, reinforcing the firm’s philosophy of contextual modernism. The project establishes a strong relationship between built form and nature, with landscape integrated as an architectural element rather than an afterthought. Transparency, layering, and spatial fluidity create a collage of spaces and materials that enhance both architectural appreciation and lived experience. Despite its boldness, the residence respects its urban context and neighboring structures, maintaining scale and presence without overpowering its surroundings.
